The Spyderco Military is a legendary model that first appeared in 1996. It was designed by Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser, originally as a knife he would “give to his son if he were going into the military.” This model quickly won users over thanks to its robustness, practicality, and innovations that significantly influenced the development of modern folding knives.

History and development

The original Military featured a wide full-flat-ground blade, a lightweight handle with an open-back construction, and a reliable LinerLock. Despite its simplicity, it stood out with its unique Trademark Round Hole for fast, fully ambidextrous opening, even while wearing gloves. The blades were made from high-quality ATS-34 steel, later upgraded to CPM 440V (now CPM S60V) – the first factory-produced knife with powder steel in Spyderco’s history. Today’s standard is CPM S30V, which offers a perfect balance of hardness, toughness, and edge retention.

As its popularity grew, variants appeared with black G10 or digital camouflage finishes, satin or DLC coatings, as well as special versions with titanium scales and advanced Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanisms. In 2016, a Military with premium CPM S110V steel was also introduced, offering exceptional wear and corrosion resistance.

Military 2 – a new standard

After more than twenty years of development and refinement, the Spyderco Military 2 arrives as the modern evolution of a legend. Introduced at BLADE Show 2022 in Atlanta and designed by Sal Glesser and his son Eric, it combines proven features from its “cousin,” the Paramilitary 2, with new ergonomic improvements.

Instead of a LinerLock, it features a Compression Lock, which is significantly stronger, safer, and positioned on the spine side of the handle to prevent accidental release. The knife can be closed safely with one hand without risking injury.

Ergonomically, the handle has been refined for better control – an enlarged index-finger choil for a more secure choked-up grip and tapered handle sections that improve comfort during extended carry.

The CPM S30V blade has a full-flat grind, a satin finish, and a combination edge (plain + serrated), making it ideal for a wide range of uses.
