Spyderco Military 2 C36GS2 – a legend in a new guise

Few knives have earned such status among professionals, soldiers, and civilian enthusiasts as the original Spyderco Military. Since its introduction in 1996, it has been the answer by the brand’s founder, Sal Glesser, to a simple yet fundamental question: “If your son were going off to the military, what knife would you give him?” The answer was the Military model – large, reliable, ergonomic, and easy to operate even while wearing gloves. After more than twenty years of service, the time came for a successor. Enter the Military 2, a modernized version designed by Sal himself together with his son Eric, which preserves the spirit of the original while bringing both structural and ergonomic improvements.

History and development of the Military

The first-generation Military offered a broad blade with a full-flat grind, a lightweight open-back construction, and an oversized round hole for easy ambidextrous opening. Initially, it was made from ATS-34 steel, later CPM 440V (now CPM S60V), and finally CPM S30V, which became the standard. Over the years, the Military appeared in various versions – from classic black G10 scales, through digital camouflage, to exclusive titanium editions. Left-handed versions and limited runs with premium steels such as CPM S110V were also produced.

Birth of the Military 2

At BLADE Show 2022 in Atlanta, the company introduced the Military 2, which immediately won the American-Made Knife of the Year award. The biggest change is the transition from the original LinerLock to the Compression Lock – a safer, stronger, and easier-to-use mechanism that eliminates the risk of accidental disengagement during hard use. The blade is mounted on a precisely machined bushing, ensuring perfect alignment and smooth action.

The black G10 scales still conceal stainless steel liners, but this time they are larger and skeletonized for lower weight and better balance. The open-back construction makes cleaning easier, and thanks to the four-position clip, the user can choose tip-up or tip-down carry on either the left or right side.

The ergonomics have received subtle refinements – a slightly enlarged index-finger choil for better control and a slimmer handle profile for greater comfort.
